![]() ![]() ![]() While we were in submissions, I told my agent, “What do you think about me going back in time two years and writing Kristen and Josh’s love story, so we can live through the events that make Sloan the person she is in her book?” So that’s what I did. So I had this idea to write this book about a woman who finds this dog, and I wanted it to be a book about grief. She dealt with anxiety, she couldn’t hold down a job, and this was somebody who was very driven prior to this happening. It was kind of baffling to me it was this horrible ripple effect where her entire life just imploded after this thing. I didn’t know at the time, but what she was struggling with was actually called complicated grief or extended bereavement. Two years after his death, she was very much still broken. ![]() I had a friend who I was very, very close to and her husband died. 6/26/2023 0 Comments Uprooted book review![]() ![]() Uprooted has a simple yet great premise: In return for protecting the people of the valley from the terrors of the Wood, the mysterious wizard called the Dragon comes every ten years and chooses a girl of seventeen to live with him in his tower. Whatever it is, there can be no doubt that Novik is a master of her craft. ![]() ![]() Perhaps it’s these elements, or something more indefinable that ensnared me so completely I felt I too was a victim of the Wood. It’s the epitome of everything I love about fantasy: wild magic, fairy tale, mysterious woodland, an enigmatic sorcerer, a feisty, likable protagonist, poetic language, and it made me feel like a teenager, discovering this wonderful genre all over again. When I saw the blurb for Uprooted, I knew it would be right up my street. Because occasionally you find a book that calls to something in you – it goes beyond loving into the realms of mild obsession. I’ve reviewed several books this year and given them ten stars, but I’d give Uprooted eleven if it were possible. A word of warning before we begin: As soon as I finished this book, it went straight into my top five all-time favourites, so be prepared for raving. ![]() 6/25/2023 0 Comments The Mist by Stephen King![]() Rather than acting as a kind of ecosystem for creatures from another dimension, the Mist in the television series appears to manifest physical entities and anomalies that represent the darkest and most troubled parts of its victims' psyche. However, its effects are wildly different from both the film and the original novella. In the television series, the Mist features similar physical properties to both the film adaptation (grey color, blue at night) and the novella (warped acoustics). It also turns a dark blue at night, and it is never stated in the film to have an acrid smell. ![]() In the film, the mist is a matte grey-chrome color and apparently does not warp acoustics. It seems to allow for a smaller field of vision than the Film. In the novella, the mist is white, has an acrid smell, and warps acoustics, causing close things to sound far away and vice versa. In the film, about three days after the mist engulfed Bridgton, Maine and the surrounding area, the creatures were exterminated by the military, and the mist dissipated for reasons unknown. ![]() It is not specified whether the mist was contained to an amount of the country or spread across the planet. In the novella, The Mist lasted for three days and presumably even longer. On the night after a freak thunderstorm, The Mist manifested from across the lake, spreading first across Bridgton, Maine, and then across an unknown amount of area, likely engulfing the planet. ![]() ![]() ![]() The Iron Tongue of Midnight is the fourth novel in Myers Baroque Mystery series.
